the supply situation sucks, but its slowly catching up.  shortage of manufacturing, shipping containers, customs, distributors coupled with a huge demand has made things difficult to say the least.

Check our Oliver Machinery, they are making a 13” bench top with a Byrd/selic head. I ordered one and they had it in stock. Unfortunately FedEx lost the shipment. Oliver gave me a refund and are trying to find it. I think I will reorder .

I checked out the Oliver site and, as Dana lamented, more supply chain issues. (See attached image)

As for Jim's suggestion to look at Grizzly, they do indeed have a half dozen 15" planers in stock. Now I'll need to figure out what the difference is in the models as they range from $1,300 to 3,500....which is just another excuse for me to procrastinate further.

I'll add my 2 cents. I have several Grizzly tools including a 15" planer with a spiral (Shelix) cutterhead. I have been quite please with the performance of the machines and the planer produces extremely  smooth surfaces requiring little sanding (I usually start at 150). Make sure that you only look at the "Helical" head machines since these are the ones with the superior angled/shearing cutters. They have a 15" (model #G1021X2) in stock for $2,795 + $199 shipping. Not cheap but in my experience a very good machine. Also, the issue of power is interesting. The spiral/helical heads do require more power since there are always blades in contact with the wood (also why they're quieter) as opposed to straight knives which give the motor a chance to "catch up" between knife strikes (strikes is why they're noisier). The other factor in noise is, as stated above, that the universal motors used in the lunchbox planers scream - think routers and skilsaws.

    Maybe that was 10 cents!

Well, I've been eyeing the Grizzly line of 15" planers but ran into this thread on Lumberjocks discussing the G0815

"I cannot find another planer that is even close to the price of this planer [with Shelix cutter head about $1700] that is as big [15”] yet compact and cuts perfectly flat.

BUT…. This planer has a manufacturing defect. While installing the helical cutter head, I found the drive gears that drive the cutter head do not fully engage. See pictures. Grizzly tech support took a gear box apart from their stock and told me it had the exact same issue with the gears. These gears will wear out prematurely or break off a tooth.
Additionally, one of the bearings in the gear box just barely touches one of the large drive gears. All bearings and gears were completely seated and installed correctly. See pictures.

I received this planer Nov 2020, just before Grizzly ran out of stock, and it is still on BO. But, the question remains when did this manufacturing defect begin? How many planers have the same issues?
If you have this planer does yours have the same issues?"

I'm going to wait out the current shortage of Thickness Planers hoping that the quality will return one the supply chain is normalized.
