Any problem gluing a piece of veneer directly to MDF with Titebond? Does the smooth/hard surface need to scuffed first?

I use MDF as a substrate all the time. It is a great substrate and does not require scuffing.

If your veneer is very thin or porous, the glue can leach through and cause staining and finishing issues. I like to use hide glue. Liquid hide glue works just fine in a mechanical press, has a nice long open time so you don't need to rush and will not impact your finish in any way.
