I spoke with Randy Wilkinson yesterday about doing a presentation for the Guild on wood identification.  He is interested and asked me to notify our members about a class he is teaching on this topic (see link).  His knowledge on this topic is vast and he is an enthusiastic speaker.  It would be helpful to hear your opinions on having a meeting on this topic.  Let me know where you stand on this from 1, hate it, to 10, Great idea.

    Jim,

Great idea. Some of us might want to bring samples to the meeting for verification.

    I’d give it a 10.

Jim, this looks good to me as well. I also give it a 10.

Has the Guild ever taken a field trip to Mystic Seaport? There's some great nautical woodworking to see there, and it's a beautiful spot.

    great idea for a meeting.

I'd ask that it cover the more practical aspects of wood id. I like the science aspect, but realistically I'm not looking at stuff under a microscope.

also how different woods look after before and after aging

10! I took his class at his workshop and at the old Yale Furniture Study. It was a fantastic experience. Highly recommend. One caveat is that you have to be interested in wood/lumber and be open to exploring and learning about wood.
