The old Downes and Reader lumber yard in Stoughton, MA was bought out by Rugby, a large architectural materials supplier, a few years ago and the focus on supplying small amounts of wood to woodworkers like us greatly decreased. During the pandemic, getting wood a Rugby, although possible, became even more difficult (requiring calling ahead and having them pull a few boards).
Good News!
The old store has now been recreated in Taunton. Jim Reader, son of one of the founders of D&R, opened up Readers’ Hardwood Supply last month. I was there today and all the 200 or so steel bins from the old location are in place and “getting more and more filled every day” according to Jim. A quick look around found all the common species as well as lots of different exotics (ebony, cocobolo, padauk, zebrawood, rosewood, makore, wenge, etc.. They are also expanding their plywood inventory – again “every day.”
It is located in an industrial park off of Route 44 and was a little hard to find – no signage from the main road.
