Jim Allen provides this information in case you missed the Boston Sunday Globe September 9 article.  In the the Address Section an excellent article was printed regarding trees that are heat tolerant, and will be successful in the Climate change environment.  The suggestions in the article are offered by John DelRosso, head arborist at the Harvard Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Ma. and can be seen here.

    The Track of Success

    by Andrew Davis

The Bevel Cut is back for another year!  This article is about Andrew Davis' perspective on owning a track saw.  Given Andrew's awkward entry into his basement workshop (who doesn't have the same misfortune?) Andrew had benefited initially from getting his precisely cut plywood sheets into the workshop.  But now Andrews finds other uses.

Click The Track of Success to read Andrew's short but direct assessment of his track saw use.

    Andrew welcomes your feedback.

    Two Windsor Chairs

    by Rob Carver

Rob Carver kicks off the EMGW membership year with an entertaining article about his two Wndsor chairs.  To build these chairs Rob took a a track that not many woodworkers do.  Using tools like a drawknife, spokeshaves, scorp, travisher, and compass plane, and others, Rob takes on this challenge this his hands full.  Rob even uses his kiln for drying the green wood used for the legs and green oak for the spindles and other parts.

If that wasn't enough, Rob went into riving, whittling, and bending the oak for the spindles.

What you might also find fascinating are the processes and other aids that Rob built to facilitate his work, including his steam "box" and his use of a dual laser level system to identify and measure the compound angle mortises for the seat.

There is so much more to this project and you can read it here

You can reach Rob at robert.carver@comcast.net.

When emails arrive marketing the tools you would like to have or a promotion or sale is advertised, what initiates your motivation to buy or pass?  Or perhaps while working on a project you’d benefit in quality, safety, or time to finish what would move you to get that in your hands?  It’s a tough call.  Discretionary savings is often inversely proportional to the desirability of certain tools.  So when, if ever, do you pull the string to buy?

Andrew Davis has some thoughts about that in his newest Bevel Cut article on Tool Shopping.

Andrew Davis brings to us a fascinating description of his Inside-Out Live Edge Mirror Frame.  Starting with a slab of ash, Andrew transforms that with some creative cuts to build a frame for a mirror that gives a natural, “edgy” appearance.  Andrew preserves the natural contours of the slab with a thoughtful consideration over where the frame segments are made.  The eye-popping appearance is only surpassed by the approach that Andrew took to make it.
