Readers of Fine Woodworking and Popular Woodworking will recognize Mike Mascelli as a leading authority on finishing and upholstery. We’ve asked him to lead us through a fundamental upholstery task: making a slip seat. He is a knowledgeable and engaging instructor, and we are delighted to welcome him. We’ve had numerous presentations on building stools and chairs, but few on upholstered pieces.
MIKE MASCELLI is a professional upholsterer in Latham NY, with over 40 years of experience working, studying, and teaching. In his upholstery work, he divides his time between classic furniture and classic cars, specializing in the British MG, Triumph, and Jaguar, employing period correct materials and detailing. He has provided upholstery for national champion cars and furniture that is on display at the US House of Representatives, in addition to instructing hundreds of students in basic upholstery techniques. He has contributed an essay on classic French upholstery techniques in Roubo on Furniture by Don Williams (Lost Arts Press) and contributed to ‘With Saw, Plane & Chisel’ by Zach Dillinger (‘Popular Woodworking’, 2016). He has completed instructional videos on Upholstery for Popular Woodworking and Fine Woodworking. Mike has published several articles on various aspects of upholstery for 360 Woodworking, WOOD magazine, and is a contributing editor for the e-magazine of the American Society of American Period Furniture Makers Pins & Tales. Mike is also the Co-Director of the Professional Refinishers Group which is a national organization founded in 1998 to connect professionals in the refinishing and conservation trades.
Mike has offered to extend the presentation beyond the normal noon ending time, suggesting that anyone interested in learning more pick up a sandwich and come back to the shop. Woodcraft management has agreed to this. We should wrap up by 2:30 to 3:00 pm.
We will not be decamping to another location for lunch this week.
