Before the woodworking begins on a project, we need a design. Many of us struggle with this, or don't even attempt original designs, favoring drawings that we purchase or find in magazines, books, or online. In this program, four EMGW members who are experienced designers from different backgrounds will each present an example of their work and explain the process of moving from a concept to a plan. (Scroll down for more about their backgrounds and interests):

  • Mike Bossin, accomplished maker and designer https://michaelbossin.com/
  • Marc Holland, Department Chair and Professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design
  • Mike Roughan, architect (retired), Chairman of Hopkinton Historical Commission
  • Linda Smith, Rhode Island School of Design educated graphic designer and professional furniture photographer
  • Rob Carver, panel moderator

9:30 -- Announcements and Introductions

9:40 -- Presentations of pieces and the design story (15 minutes each, with Q&A)

PRESENTER BIOS

Mike Roughan

Mike’s woodworking interests started in his father’s basement woodshop but gained momentum in his college’s architectural woodshop. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Architecture, he spent the next 45 years as a practicing architect. During that time, he has slowly been honing his woodworking skills (and tools). The majority of projects have been both new and restored furniture as well as millwork and cabinetry for family and friends.

His design philosophy has been influenced by his career as an architect designing institutional buildings as well as his interest in historical preservation through his decade long position as Chairman of his town’s Historical Commission.

Mike Bossin

I started my creative journey as a potter and transitioned to woodworking. I have at various times made weaving looms, custom cabinets and department store displays and fixtures. I have owned two crafts galleries and a commercial lighting business. Several years ago I retired and have returned to woodworking full time.

I have pottery in the permanent collection of the London Ontario Regional Art Museum and The Nancy Poole Gallery. My piece “Twelve O Clock” was featured in the Fine Woodworking Readers Gallery.

Marc Holland is a Professor and the Department Chair of Studio Foundation at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) for 21 years. He holds BFA in Sculpture and Photography from MassArt, an MFA in Sculpture from Bard College and an MFA in Visual Art (Photography and Sculpture) from Rutgers University. He currently teaches Form Study (3D Design), Visual Language (2D Design), Time (4D Design), Projects in Wood (Beginning Woodworking), and Toys for Elephants (Sculpture). In addition, Marc teaches an Art School Preparatory course each Fall at the Beijing Royal School in Beijing, and is the lead instructor for a Travel Course to China titled Boston to Beijing: China Through the Five Senses, taking MassArt students for two weeks in Beijing and Dunhuang.

Marc’s primary interest is sculpture, using mainly wood combined with various materials. His love for historic objects is the driving force behind his work. Although not a furniture maker, his interest in the craft, and its history, is growing.
