He has given lectures and demonstrations for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Winterthur museum in Delaware, Historic New England and other organizations. In addition to several articles for Fine Woodworking magazine he co-wrote an article titled, “Classical Proportioning In Eighteenth Century American Design, published in the 2017 American Furniture journal along with Will Neptune. Steve worked with former NBSS grad Tom MacDonald as an advisor to the Rough Cut show on WGBH in Boston and appeared in a number of the episodes as a guest.

Steve has a BA in philosophy from Gordon College. He lives in Manchester by the Sea with his wife Peggy and has 2 sons, Jake and Noah.

As Steve writes, his topic is:

THE UNASSUMING DRESSING TABLE.

This presentation will take a deeper look into 3 New England Queen Ann dressing tables. The construction methods and tools marks show thoughtful attempts to balance efficiency with an elegant façade as well as the hidden complexity of proportions used in the design. Some of the techniques are surprisingly simple while others are subtle and quite sophisticated. These ideas could be useful to any woodworker even those not interested in period furniture.
