wooden sled (4)

Created on: March 19, 2021
After the first snow this year it became obvious to me that my grandson needed a sled. After looking at luge sleds online, I decided that I would try and build one.
A sled takes quite a pounding and if it's going to last, it has to be pretty ruggedly built. I decided on hickory for the frame and ash for the runners and top rail. I made the deck of meranti. Red for the center and yellow (it's lighter) for the outer pieces. I used some scraps of bubinga as protection in the back.
The front crosspiece will take a loop of rope hooked over it because my son said that he wanted to be able to tow it easily.
  • hickory and bubinga wear strips on the runners, hickory tow bar
  • hickory crossbars are dovetailed together and through bolted to the runners
  • bubinga plug covers through bolt on the top, hickory and bubinga wear strips cover it on the bottom
