Message from the President

Here we are deep into summer, but as we approach the end of July, I know you are all wondering “What does the coming year for the Guild involve”. Well, behind the scenes, folks have been hard at work putting together the events for the coming year. In the last couple of years, we have done Chairs, then Casework; this year our theme is Embellishments. I think we all know that after we master the art of joinery, design, and finishing, it is often the added details that truly set a piece apart. To embellish is to improve or beautify by adding detail or ornamentation. These additions can be banding, marquetry, inlay, relief carving, or other details.

The year kicks off with a presentation by Jerry Ward, former Consulting Curator, Art of the Americas, MFA. He will take us through the history of embellishment in New England furniture. This is on September 13, 9:00AM at the Lexington Library. Please mark your calendars. As we go through the year, monthly Saturday meetings will be augmented by hands-on sessions where you get to actually make embellishments. These sessions will be published throughout the year.

The other big news for the Guild is that we are completely revamping the website. We have chosen a technology provider name Wild Apricot to provide a framework for our new website. This will allow us to have a more dynamic site with up-to-date content. This will allow members to update their own profiles and contact info. We will have an Events Page with map support. Members will have the ability to post photos. There will be support for our various subgroups (i.e. FIG, mentor, Board, Pro, etc.), including subgroup email.

And we will have electronic payment options for memberships and other activities. You will be able to register for certain events, such as the picnic. One of our key goals is to have this all working by August 1 so that membership renewal can be handled by the new system. As we approach that date, the website and the Announce email may go down while we transfer the new web capabilities to the existing Domain name. We will keep you updated.

So, have a fun and productive rest of the summer and stay safe in the shop.

Jack Murphy

President, Eastern Massachusetts Guild of Woodworkers
